Between us we have over 30 years of HR experience, supporting businesses on HR matters in private industry, not-for profit and the public sector.
We decided to branch out on our own because together we have a lot to offer smaller businesses that do not have in-house HR functions, and we enjoy the variety that HR consultancy offers.

We are both from Yorkshire and have lived away and returned to our home county to settle down with our families. We met when we were doing our HR training at Leeds Metropolitan University in the late 1990’s and have been great friends ever since.

Antonia Nicholls, Principal Consultant
Antonia Nicholls (formerly Ridge) qualified in 2002 and is a Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). She has worked in the Civil Service and has 12 years' experience in the Higher Education Sector.
With the benefit of having managed a large team in her role as Deputy Head of Human Resources at Bradford University, Antonia understands the challenges of life as a manager, and will offer practical HR Advice and guidance to both suit your needs and minimize any risk to the business.
Antonia has a Certificate in Executive Coaching and is trained and experienced in the Higher Education Job Evaluation Scheme (HERA). She has undertaken Equal Pay Reviews and has produced a variety of HR Policies and Procedures through consultation with trade unions, including a pay and grading structure and competency framework.
Antonia is experienced in advising on employment law, discipline, grievance and performance problems (including sickness absence management), restructures and UKBA immigration requirements. She has experience of recruitment/ selection as well as induction. Antonia is experienced in delivering the full range of HR training to managers.
Antonia is a member of the Management Committee of a local Nursery and has advised on employee policy and procedures, as well as dealing with poor performance and recruiting new staff.
Julie Shimmin, Principal Consultant
Julie Shimmin, (formerly Ribbons) Qualified as a Human Resources Professional in 2002 after successfully completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management at Leeds Metropolitan University and achieving CIPD status. Since then Julie has held a number of senior HR roles at Leeds United and International Personal Finance (IPF). Julie has 5 years professional services experience having held positions at Pinsent Masons in a HR generalist role and ultimately Graduate Recruitment Adviser. Julie also worked for Gamestec Leisure and Leisure Connection where she led a factory closure and collective redundancy as well as the re-organisation of logistics and distribution within the Group.
Julie is an experienced recruiter having been responsible for the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme as well as high volume Senior UK and International recruitment in her position at IPF. As National Resourcing Manager for the NHS, Julie led the team to win the AGR (Association of Graduate Recruitment) Award for the Best Recruitment and Selection process in 2007 – recruiting approximately 450 graduate trainees using lead edge recruitment practices. Julie has run large complex assessment centres.
Since 2014 Julie has advised clients across a number of different industries and varying sizes. This has added to her experience particularly, the challenges faced by smaller and start up business. Julie also worked jointly with Antonia advising on and assisting the merger of a number of charities including involvement in TUPE transfer.
Julie is experienced in advising on all areas of generalist HR and in delivering human resources and recruitment training to line managers.
